Impact of Federal Elections on Local Employment

At least one interpretation of former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neil’s declaration that -All politics is local- suggests that while people may support or reject an issue on a national basis, they tend to actually vote in ways that impact them locally. If you subscribe to this notion and are concerned about local government hiring and resulting programs and services then you will want to listen carefully to the Presidential and Congressional candidates in the final weeks of the 2012 campaign.

Local government hiring depends on both intergovernmental revenues as well as the receipt of local fees and taxes. Whether you embrace Keynesian economics which promotes economic recovery and renewed growth through increased government spending, or are inclined to believe that stimulating private sector business hiring and spending through tax reductions is the answer, consider each strategy’s impact on the following.

The federal government has a long history of providing both entitlement and competitive grants to local governments directly, through state government and via regional planning bodies. These grants pay for all, or a portion, of costs to provide a variety of transportation, housing, urban redevelopment, health, welfare, social services, education, criminal justice, public safety and other services to counties, cities, school and special districts. The extent to which these grants are funded, as well as the responsibility and mechanism for service delivery are central issues for both major parties when proposing and approving federal budgets.

Thriving businesses of any size employ people and together they pay a wide range of different fees and taxes, which support all levels of government. Business-to-business synergy fuels additional growth, and employees can be counted on to purchase homes, cars and other products and services locally. Federal taxes, monetary and trade policies, and assistance programs affect business investment and expansion decisions, as do environmental and other regulations and practices. State and local taxes, incentives, controls and restrictions also have substantial impact. Service demands, and the size and scope of a local government workforce, is inextricably linked to the growth and prosperity of the host community and its business base.

In its simplest equation some would argue that taxes and federal spending must be cut to facilitate ideal business growth conditions while others advocate that government stimulus and other spending programs (which rely on increased tax revenues) create a more expeditious path to economic recovery. As in so many of life’s most puzzling quandaries, the answer may well lie in a blended approach. National security, immigration, health, welfare, education and social services are, of course, also critical components of not only economic recovery, but of bolstering local economies and strengthening government workforces, communities and families. The issues are complex. The stakes, risks and rewards of making smart governing decisions are substantial. Regardless your perspective, exercise your cherished right to vote on November 6th!

Know your resumes purpose: You are not writing a resume in hopes of getting a job; you are writing a resume in hopes of getting an interview. Try to briefly summarize your best qualities. You can expand on the information you provide in your resume when you meet with the employer in person.
Keep it clean: Whether you like it or not, most employers will make a judgement about your resume without even reading it through first. Make sure it is organized, with eye-catching typography and appropriate titles.
Edit: Editing is key for resume writing. Tailor your resume for the job you are applying for. Most employers probably wont care about that job you had as a grocery store cashier when you were 14. Also, do NOT try to cram three pages of information onto one pageit looks crowded and messy.
Short & sweet: Be concise and to-the-point. Try to keep your resume to one or two pages. Beyond two pages, employers will lose interest and you will miss out on a chance to get a job!
Provide professional contact information: If you dont already have one, create a professional-sounding email. Nobody is going to take you seriously with an email like . Similarly, make sure the answering machine at the phone number you provide on your resume isnt silly or inappropriate.
Proofread: There is no place for spelling or grammar errors in your resume. Make sure the language you use is accurate, but stay away from slang and jargon. You should never assume that the employer knows all the specialized terms you do.

Violation Of Employee Privacy

In spite of the fact that workers monitoring systems do not directly contravene the law, they add to creating a unreceptive work environment, that is offensive both from ethical and legal standpoints. There is Privacy Act that includes primary law related to members of staff privacy rights. This law forbids third parties to receive disclosing or accessing information personal exchange of ideas, to any outer parties without previous consent from the recipient or author. The two major exceptions to the law are that employer has the privilege to monitor workers conversation under the circumstances if they take place during the everyday business hours and adding the indirect permission on the side of employees. By themselves, issues do arise in situations when a worker has not been informed beforehand about possible footage.

This law gives virtually unrestricted rights to employers; though, with the increasing number of legal events against employers disobedience of employee privacy rights, the necessity for a change has been approved. To be more exact, legislation proposes to limit employers in electronic monitoring staff and applies to analysis, reporting, storage and collection of information connected with employees either partially or as whole by wire, radio, photo-optical, photo-electronic, or electromagnetic system. Under this statement, employers have to use notification techniques to inform their employees about the forthcoming monitoring, detail which private data would be collected and in which way it will be used. Employer also dont a right to monitor rest room, dressing room, and locker room facilities. Employers would be charged for each abuse for $10.000 as a minimum.

Even though the Act about privacy has not been accepted yet, the requirement for legal adjustments that protect workers privacy privileges has been acknowledged. Going even further, the growing number of officially permitted actions initiated by staff seeking defense from state judges also proves that there is a noticeable need to keep a tight rein on employer monitoring.
